Microdermabrasion has the potential to revitalize your skin! It can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, diminish large pores, minimize the appearance of sun damage, and make your daily skincare routine more effective. But how can you make sure that your treatment is as effective and comfortable as possible? Here are some easy tips to help you prepare for your appointment.
Protect Yourself from the Sun
Sun protection is always important for your skin, but it is especially so in the days leading up to your microdermabrasion treatment. Remember, microdermabrasion provides powerful mechanical exfoliation. If you have a sunburn, this normally comfortable treatment could cause some significant irritation.
If you plan to be outdoors before your appointment, be sure to apply generous amounts of SPF to the part of your body that will undergo treatment. Wearing a hat and other protective sun gear is also a good idea.
Avoid Certain Products and Medications
During the last 2 – 3 days before your appointment, you should avoid any skincare products that exfoliate or irritate the skin. For example, you should not use retinol, retinoids, or glycolic acid. It is also recommended that you do not take aspirin or any aspirin-based medications. They can thin the blood and increase your risk of bruising and minor bleeding.
Do Not Shave or Wax
Shaving and waxing can thin your skin and cause irritation. It is fine to shave the day before your appointment, but waxing and plucking should be avoided for at least a week prior to your session.
Go with a Clean Face
Before your appointment, thoroughly cleanse your face and be sure to remove all makeup. Afterward, do not apply any topical products unless your med spa team specifically directs you to do so.
Reach Out if You Have Questions
If you have never undergone professional microdermabrasion treatment before, you might be a bit nervous about what to expect. It is perfectly fine to call your med spa team to ask questions about what you should do to prepare, what will happen during your session, and how your skin may feel afterward. Being well-informed can help you to be excited — rather than nervous — about your appointment!
