Hyperpigmentation? No, Thank You! 4 Tips to Help You Prevent Sun Spots

Sun spots, also known as liver spots or age spots, are a common issue that occurs in adults over 50. In some cases, younger people can even develop them. They are usually harmless, but they do not exactly look great. While they can be faded with the help of skin rejuvenation procedures, wouldn’t it be better to avoid them in the first place? Here are four tips that may help you maintain an even skin tone:

Cover Up

Sun spots form in response to exposure to UV light, so one of the best ways to prevent them is to shield your skin from the sun. Whenever you spend more than a few minutes outdoors, be sure to wear appropriate clothing. Long sleeves and a wide-brimmed hat can do much to protect you (clothing with a UPF rating of 30 or higher is ideal).

Do Not Forget Sunscreen

Granted, in some situations, it is not practical or desirable to stay completely covered up. When you want to show some skin, be sure to wear broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Be sure to reapply it every two hours. If you are going to be swimming outdoors, more frequent application may be necessary.

Use Sunless Tanners

Golden, sun-kissed skin can be beautiful, but it has a dark side. A tan is basically just skin damage! If you want the look of a natural tan without putting yourself at risk of sun spots, try using sunless tanning products. For example, you might occasionally get a professional spray tan. You can also try at-home tanning products; be sure they are approved by the FDA so you can be confident that you will not accidentally harm your skin.

Use a Vitamin C Serum

Vitamin C can help to neutralize free radicals and inhibit the production of melanin (skin pigmentation). Try adding vitamin C serum to your daily skincare routine. Keep in mind, though, that some products are more effective than others. Choose a serum that contains L-ascorbic acid at a concentration of 10 – 20%. (If you have sensitive skin, you may need to start with a lower concentration.

Sun spots are no fun! Practice good skincare so you can avoid unsightly hyperpigmentation.
